Lois Carson is a Ceramicist based in rural Aberdeenshire, who works from home in her garden studio. Here she hand builds whimsical, functional and sculptural creations.  She was awarded a BA (Hons) Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art in 2003, and a Master of Fine Art in 2007.

Deftly hand painted, carved, sculpted then glazed and fired, her pieces range from the traditional and functional, juxtaposed with a quirky fresh modern twist, to simple beautifully made embellished object d’art, all produced with joy and an acute attention to detail which is reflected in each unique finished item.

Mainly inspired by nature, Lois creates work that reflects both her love of flora and fauna but also encapsulates her passion for utilising colour, design and form. The varied range of her creations almost defies categorisation as it falls across many differing genres, each crafted to perfection; hand-building with no boundaries.

Lois draws on a range of techniques and clever use of perspective and scale transforming clay into oversized giant seed pods, repurposed ‘found’ hardwood adorned with pinch pot birds and flocks of small perching birds that adorn incised and glazed hanging planters, candlesticks with hand decorated designs in colourful underglazes, alongside vessels finished with volcanic glaze adding a textured detail to the surface.

Always testing and pushing the boundaries makes for an ever changing and challenging studio experience for Lois.
